Recruit Academy
We'll teach you everything you need to know. Entirely free of charge.
In order to provide the highest level of service, all members are required to complete a training program where they will learn the skills and knowledge necessary to safely perform the duties of a firefighter.
All non-certified candidates must complete our Recruit Academy where they will obtain a State Firemen’s & Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas (SFFMA) firefighter certification. Candidates who already possess a firefighting certification may not be required to attend our academy. Candidates who are currently certified by TDSHS/NREMT will be required to actively participate in our EMS program, although it is not required to hold an EMS certification.
Prior to starting the academy each recruit must pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT). The PAT is a sequence of events requiring the candidate to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. The rigorous and fair test is designed to provide the department with a reliable and diverse pool of candidates who can handle the physical demands of firefighting. Within 5 minutes and 50 seconds, candidates must successfully complete eight separate events simulating the common and demanding firefighting tasks.
